Kids listen to simple-to-follow-along instructional relaxation audiotapes. “Frog’s Favorite Things,” uses mindful sensory techniques to relax and calm. “The Grateful Gecko,” encourages relaxation through guided thoughts of gratitude. “Sleepy Snake Snooze,” uses tension-relaxation techniques to encourage restful sleep/naps.

Awareness of Relaxation and Meditation

Learning Objectives: To be able to experience mindful relaxation and meditation.

Goal: Students will gain a better understanding of the benefits of taking time to relax and meditate and the benefits of the day-to-day integration of this mindfulness tool.
Arrange circle time to give plenty of room for children to stretch out with space. Discuss the terms Mindful and Grateful. Mindful means to pay attention to what is happening right now in the moment. Explain students will explore relaxation tapes, which means being present in each moment while listening to the words to help to relax.

EXERCISE 1: Frog’s Favorite Things - Uses sound focusing and simple sensory awareness to calm the mind and promote mindfulness/awareness.

EXERCISE 2: Grateful Gecko - Students will meditate and reflect on things they are grateful for.

EXERCISE 3: Sleepy Snake Snooze - Students will experience relaxation to promote rest and sleep.
LESSON WRAP-UP: Ask the students how they feel after completing Reptile Relaxation. Offer a designated place for calming or independent use of Reptile Relaxation quietly on their own. Explain that this can help when feeling overwhelmed or stressed.
